Maasai Diet

The Maasai people do not have a lot of food to choose from. For the traditional Maasai, cattle was there primary source of food. They would eat the cattle's raw meat, raw blood, and raw milk. The less traditional would eat goats and sheep also. Some people would eat fruits and vegetables and many of the villages would not eat fruits or vegetables at all. It is surprising how these used to only live off of cattle.
Now the Maasai people have a little more of a variety of food. For example, they heard other animals like sheep and grow food like maize. I made a maize porridge called ugali and it tasted very plain. The Maasai people mix the maize with whatever they have. Sometimes they will use honey , milk, and even the cattle blood to mix it with. Because of their diet, they do not get all of the nutrients that they need. Surprisingly, a lot of the Maasai are still healthy with their diet.

The white food on the bottom right of the plate is ugali. The food around it are other things they could mix with it.
